If It’s not a love story, how would it be?
Kaleidoscope, — You’re probably familiar with Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. Their music graces Spotify’s Global Top Charts every time they release a new song. And one of my favorite songs they’ve performed is “Everything Has Changed,” released in 2012 on their album “Red.”
Have you listened it?
Everything Has Changed – this song has a profound meaning about the feeling of awe and joy when meeting someone new, to the point where your entire outlook on life changes in an instant. The song captures the moment when a simple introduction can have a profound impact and change everything, especially for the lives of two people falling in love.
Overall, “Everything Has Changed” is a song about falling in love with a best friend or close friend. The song depicts the surprising and beautiful feeling of realizing that a close relationship has blossomed into something deeper. A simple encounter or small event can be a turning point that changes one’s entire outlook on the world.
The music video for this song depicts two young children who meet at school and feel an instant connection, reminiscent of pure childhood love. At the end of the video, it’s revealed that the children are younger versions of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, further reinforcing the message that true love is timeless and long-lasting.
However, I’ve tried to explore the meaning of this song from a different perspective. One of heartbreak, sadness, and acceptance.
What if this song isn’t about falling in love, but rather about someone who is willing to accept that everything has changed?
As the beginning of the music video shows, a boy and a girl meet in the same class, doing familiar things and looking very happy. And by the end of the video, it turns out they are actually diminutive versions of Ed and Taylor.
Let’s change the perspective: Taylor and Ed are two people who were once in a relationship. Then, one day, they discover that what they’ve been planning for years will have to be paid for by separation. For one reason or another, they agree to part ways even though they still feel love.
All I knew
This morning when I woke
Is I know something now
Know something now I didn’t before
And all I’ve seen
Since eighteen hours ago
Is green eyes and freckles and your smile
In the back of my mind making me feel like
I want to use the characters Ed and Tay to illustrate the story. The lyrics in this story describe how all they knew was that when they woke up, the days went by as usual. Then they met each other and suddenly everything changed for the better. The only thing they knew was that they were falling for each other. Love made them feel a warm flutter of warmth envelop their hearts.
‘Cause all I know is we said, “Hello”
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
And everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
You’ll be mine and I’ll be yours
All I know since yesterday
Is everything has changed
Whatever happens, all they know is that from the moment they greeted each other, they will live together in the future. Two hearts in love make each other their home. All they desire in their minds and every thought is the desire to belong to each other forever. To live life together, to live in the same house, to raise children, and to make their dreams of being together a reality. The vision of the future was so clear before their eyes. However, that never happened, and everything has changed now.
And all my walls
Stood tall painted blue
But I’ll take them down, take them down
And open up the door for you
And all I feel
In my stomach are butterflies
The beautiful kind, makin’ up for lost time
Takin’ flight, makin’ me feel like
In this part, Ed and Tay seem to want to describe their desire to destroy all egocentrism, for the sake of a good relationship with each other. The love in this part is depicted so sincerely. They don’t hesitate to give in for their partner. They’re willing to do everything in the name of love. All the struggles make them feel happy because they’ve fought for, worked for, and made happy. Doesn’t true love always find a way to feel happiness?
Come back and tell me why
I’m feelin’ like I’ve missed you all this time
And meet me there tonight
And let me know that it’s not all in my mind
Despite being separated for years, they secretly harbor feelings of longing. If only they could turn back time and erase all the impossibilities, they truly want to return to another parallel universe to experience happiness together. Not necessarily as two adults in love, but more than that, they care. The lingering longing is a manifestation of sincerity itself. The desire to talk to each other, spend time, and relive the memories of their love is the only thing they know.
“I just wanna know you better now.”
Drawing a line straight into the future, this lyric is one of the most sincere verses in the song, in my opinion.
The lyrics of “I just wanna know you better now” seem to tell the story of their desire for each other to live better lives in this life, as well as in the future. What Ed wants when he meets Tay again is for Tay to be far more perfect and happy than before. And vice versa. Meeting someone who means so much to us and brings love into our lives will always be remembered, filled with the hope that they will live happily ever after. With or without us.
For the music video, I think the ending scene was the part that gave me the most goosebumps. I was touched when Ed and Tay met again to pick up their respective children.
Their children had become very close friends. Ed looked at little Taylor with such joy, while Tay looked at little Ed with such tenderness. Everything seemed to be amicable, as they looked at each other and smiled as if to say, “Don’t worry, I’m happy now.”
